The conduct of the local government elections in Nigeria is usually managed by the State Independent Electoral Commissions, howbeit, the conduct of the FCT area council election differs, as section 103(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) designates the Independent National Electoral Commission as the authorised body to conduct and manage the Federal Capital Territory Area Councils Elections.
In furtherance, INEC has scheduled the FCT Area Council elections for the 12th of February 2022. According to the Electoral Act 113(1), the FCT area council election runs in an interval of 3 years, as such the last FCT area council election was conducted in March 2019, and expectedly the tenure of the incumbent chairmen and councillors will be dissolved in 2022. Thus, the necessity for the forthcoming area council election.
